Isle of Man TT hero John McGuinness said he would ‘give up’ after first win, wife reveals – Daily Star

The Englishman has the second-most Isle of Man TT wins in history with 23.

McGuinness made his return to the event for the first time in three years after a serious leg break in 2017.

The flagship event was to be the legendary racer’s comeback since crashing at North West 200.

With several broken vertebrae and compound fractures to his lower right leg, the biker was forced to “grow” new bone for just over a year.

But the 47-year-old was forced to retire with his Norton bike in the Superbike and Lightweight classes this year.

And an engine bolt break forced him to retire in the Senior TT.

McGuinness’ first win at the Isle of Man TT came in the 1999 Lightweight division with Honda.

And his wife revealed a surprising promise from the 23-time winner.

Speaking to BetVictor, McGuinness said: “He carried on throughout his career just pushing and pushing and pushing.

“And he said ‘I will get to TT’.

“He said ‘when I win my first TT, that’s it, I’ll give up Becky’.”

The biker’s spouse went on to reveal the events after his first win 20 years ago.

McGuinness added: “It’s like the anniversary of winning his first TT on a 250.

“So I was like ‘great’, I was crying and happy for him.

“I said ‘that’s it, you’re going to give up’.

“Well, how naive was it?”

It comes as Formula 1 fans have started switching to MotoGP.
