Isle of Man-based diocese facing ruin puts churches up for sale – The Times

A Church of England diocese has said it is on the verge of financial ruin and will have to sell off many of its churches.

The diocese of Sodor and Man, based on the Isle of Man, is one of 42 dioceses within the church. It has told worshippers that churches will be sold off “if their market value exceeds their value to the mission of God”, suggesting that the diocese could thrive with a quarter of the churches.

A document warns that lockdown “has brought us, along with many other dioceses, to the brink of financial ruin” and states: “There is a widespread acceptance both within and outside the church that we can’t afford all the church buildings we currently have.”
