Over 50 firearms and 520 rounds of ammunition were handed into police as part of the recent weapon surrender programme.

The constabulary also says 80 bladed articles – including knives, machetes and swords – and a crossbow were also given in during the initiative which began on July 20 and finished on Sunday (August 4).

Those who gave up any weapons were able to do so without being prosecuted for illegal possession – however if any of the items are found to be linked to a crime further investigations will be carried out.

Officers took to social media this week to reveal the findings, calling the programme a success.
